The evolution of sexual reproduction is associated with an inevitable complication: females and males play different roles in reproduction, so what is good for a female is not necessarily what is good for a male. During the last few decades, we have gained a deeper understanding of different forms of evolutionary conflict between the sexes and their importance for fundamental biological phenomena. I will discuss various such conflicts, using examples from my own research on insects to illustrate the dynamic nature of conflict. This will range from mating behaviour in water striders over the evolution of genital morphology, to more complex issues such as sex-specific genetic architecture of life history traits and speciation. As we will see, evolutionary conflict between the sexes have shaped and continues to shape biodiversity at several different levels.
