PEER COMMUNITY IN : Une alternative gratuite au système de publication actuel
Peer Community In (PCI) - https://peercommunityin.org/ - est une initiative scientifique ouverte (à but non lucratif et non commercial) qui offre aux auteurs et aux lecteurs une alternative gratuite au système de publication actuel. Les auteurs de preprints peuvent se tourner vers PCI pour obtenir la validation de leurs articles par le biais d'une évaluation par les pairs. Une fois accepté et recommandé, le preprint devient une référence valide qui peut être citée dans la littérature.
Une des originalités de PCI est qu'il ne publie pas lui-même les preprints.
S'ils le souhaitent, les auteurs peuvent soumettre leurs préprints recommandés par PCI pour publication dans des revues comme Peer Community Journal (PCJ) - https://peercommunityjournal.org/ ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MKpImtupHI. Cette revue généraliste en libre accès, créée en novembre 2021 par PCI, publie des articles recommandés par PCI en libre accès, sans examen supplémentaire par les pairs et sans frais pour les auteurs.
Cette spécificité permet aux auteurs de faire un choix non exclusif entre PCI et les revues, réduisant ainsi les hésitations à utiliser PCI. Au total, 17 PCI ont été créés à ce jour (voir la liste ici : https://peercommunityin.org/current-pcis/).
PCI est soutenue par le LabEx CeMEB et par 150 autres institutions/universités/bibliothèques (dont la bibliothèque de Harvard, l'université d'Oxford, VU Amsterdam, l'INRAE, l'université Paris-Saclay, le CNRS, l'université de Louvain, la bibliothèque royale danoise et la bibliothèque de l'université de Montréal....). - voir https://peercommunityin.org/pci-network/.
Le champ d'application de plusieurs PCI est conforme à celui du LabEx CeMEB - qui soutient officiellement et financièrement cette initiative - notamment PCI Evolutionary Biology - https://evolbiol.peercommunityin.org/ - et PCI Ecology - https://ecology.peercommunityin.org/.
Fait important, l'École doctorale Gaïa de l'Université de Montpellier considère les preprints recommandés par les PCI comme équivalents à des articles évalués par les pairs et publiés dans des revues internationales. Les doctorants peuvent donc les compter parmi le nombre minimum de publications requis pour la soutenance de leur thèse.
Voici quelques points forts de PCI et de PCJ en 2023 :
- Le nombre de soumissions et de recommandations de PCI a fortement augmenté, avec 465 soumissions pour l'ensemble des PCI en 2023 (contre 302 soumissions en 2022 et 181 en 2021), et 188 preprints recommandés (contre 109 en 2022 et 81 en 2021).
- En 2023, 122 articles (contre 83 en 2022) ont été publiés dans PCJ, ce qui porte à 290 le nombre total d'articles publiés dans cette revue en libre accès diamant depuis son lancement en novembre 2021.
- Les accès web aux recommandations de PCI et aux articles de PCJ ont été en moyenne de 13 000 par mois en 2023, soit deux fois plus qu'en 2022.
- HAL (l'archive ouverte institutionnelle française) et PCI sont désormais interopérables. Les auteurs peuvent effectuer une pré-soumission de leur preprint à PCI directement à partir de HAL. HAL affiche également l'information si l'article est recommandé (comme bioRxiv depuis 2021). Nous prévoyons de développer le même type d'interopérabilité avec d'autres archives ouvertes telles que Zenodo (UE) et DIGITAL-CSIC (Espagne).
- À la fin de l'année 2023, 1 083 scientifiques de 60 pays avaient signé le manifeste PCI (https://peercommunityin.org/pci-manifesto/). Si vous ne l'avez pas encore fait, nous vous encourageons à signer ce manifeste.
- Plus de 150 institutions/universités soutiennent désormais PCI et Peer Community Journal (https://peercommunityin.org/pci-network/). Les 28 nouveaux soutiens de 2023 comprennent la bibliothèque de Harvard, l'université de Central Queensland, l'université d'Exeter, l'université Sorbonne Paris Nord, l'université de Liverpool, l'université de Glasgow, l'université de Gand, l'université de Leiden et l'université de Milan.... Les soutiens financiers permettent d'assurer le fonctionnement et le développement de PCI et de Peer Community Journal et de maintenir la gratuité de la revue pour les auteurs et les lecteurs.
- Une nouvelle PCI a été créée en 2023 (la première dans le domaine des sciences humaines et sociales) : PCI Organization Studies - https://orgstudies.peercommunityin.org/ - portant le nombre total de PCI à 17 : https://peercommunityin.org/current-pcis/.
- Quatre PCI sont actuellement en projet = PCI Agriculture, PCI Plant Sciences, PCI Nutrition et PCI Psychology.

PEER COMMUNITY IN : A NON-PROFIT AND NON-COMMERCIAL PUBLISHING SYSTEM
Here are the highlights of 2023 of Peer Community In (PCI, https://peercommunityin.org/) and Peer Community Journal (PCJ, https://peercommunityjournal.org/), a non-profit and non-commercial publishing system free for authors and readers, managed by scientists and funded by more than 150 research organisations worldwide.
The scope of several PCIs are in line with the LabEx CeMEB - which officially and financially support this initiative - notably PCI Evolutionary Biology - https://evolbiol.peercommunityin.org/ - and PCI Ecology - https://ecology.peercommunityin.org/.

- The number of PCI submissions and recommendations has increased sharply, with 465 submissions for all PCIs in 2023 (compared with 302 submissions in 2022 and 181 in 2021), and 188 recommended preprints (compared with 109 in 2022 and 81 in 2021).
- In 2023, 122 articles (compared with 83 in 2022) were published in PCJ, bringing to 290 the total number of articles published in this diamond open access journal since its launch in November 2021.
- Web access to PCI recommendations and PCJ articles averaged 13,000 per month in 2023, twice as many as in 2022.
- HAL (the French institutional open archive) and PCI are now interoperable. Authors can make a pre-submission of their preprint to PCI directly from HAL. HAL also displays the information if the article is recommended, (like bioRxiv since 2021). We plan to develop the same type of interoperability with other open archives such as Zenodo (EU) and DIGITAL-CSIC (Spain).
- By the end of 2023, 1,083 scientists from 60 countries had signed the PCI manifesto (https://peercommunityin.org/pci-manifesto/). If you haven't done so already, I encourage you to sign this manifesto.
- Along the LabEx CeMEB, over 150 institutions/universities now support PCI and Peer Community Journal (https://peercommunityin.org/pci-network/). The 28 new supporters in 2023 include Harvard Library, Central Queensland University, University Exeter, Université Sorbonne Paris Nord, University of Liverpool, University of Glasgow, Ghent University, University of Leiden, and University of Milan... Financial support ensures the operation and development of PCI and Peer Community Journal and that the journal remains free of charge for authors and readers.
- A new PCI was created in 2023 (the first in the Humanities and Social Sciences): PCI Organization Studies - https://orgstudies.peercommunityin.org/ - bringing the total number of PCIs to 17: https://peercommunityin.org/current-pcis/. - Four PCIs are currently being planned = PCI Agriculture, PCI Plant Sciences, PCI Nutrition, and PCI Psychology.
- As a reminder, the Gaïa Doctoral School considers preprints recommended by PCI as equivalent to peer-reviewed articles published in international journals. Doctoral students can therefore count them among the minimum number of publications required to defend their thesis.
