Viruses that infect bacteria, or bacteriophages (phages), are among the most abundant entities in the gut microbiota. However, the mechanisms by which they persist as unique viral pools and their role in modulating intestinal bacterial communities remain poorly understood. In this seminar, I will use in vitro and in vivo data to suggest that phages differently replicate and kill their hosts depending on the opportunities for infection and coevolution encountered in the intestinal tract and that multiple dynamics might take place in parallel, shaping the intestinal microbial equilibrium associated to gut health and disease.
