The science of epigenetics, the rebellious little sister of genetics, studies heritable changes in gene function that is not based on changes in the DNA sequence. It has gained importance in a wide variety of fields ranging from molecular biology to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, but also covering the improvement of animal and plant species for agricultural use as well as the relationships between species, biodiversity, and evolution. Business models based on the use of epigenetic markers and epigenetic concepts are beginning to emerge, raising questions of public awareness and societal perception. Epigenetics remains a complex and sometimes still enigmatic field, especially for a wider audience.
The scientific network “Epigenetics in Ecology and Evolution” (3E) was created in 2013, first as a RT3EP, and then continued as GDR3E (https://rtp-3e.wixsite.com/rt3e). It had allowed to create a platform for exchange between scientific domains that communicate not so easily: molecular biologists, and scientists who work in the fields of ecology and evolution, but also philosophers and historians, not to forget colleagues from the medical field and anthropologists. It is occasion to look back over the last 10 years and to reflect on how the field has evolved and what remains to do.
