Current theory stresses the need for biodiversity conservation at a large, landscape scale. At the same time, theory also calls for a more central role for local human communities in conservation. This can create inherent conflicts for conservation practitioners attempting to work at multiple scales. This talk by Drs. Amy Vedder, an ecologist, and Bill Weber, a social scientist, discusses efforts to address the challenge of integrating wildlife and human interests in their work with mountain gorillas, grizzly bears, and other species.
Drs. Vedder and Weber have worked for more than 30 years as conservation practitioners in Africa and North America and currently teach at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. They are co-authors of the critically acclaimed book, In the Kingdom of Gorillas, co-editors of African Rain Forest Ecology and Conservation, and currently writing another book based on their experiences.
They will be visiting the CEFE on the 15th and 16th of November, and happy to discuss with both students and researchers!
