Museomics is a comparatively recent field in evolutionary biology allowing to untap the full potential of natural history collections by generating data from degraded historical DNA. Among competing genome reduction approaches, HyRAD-X permits to conduct museomics without relying on commercially synthesized probes and therefore enhances the capacity to generate genomic data from historical DNA with greater flexibility. A presentation of the methodology is given along with empirical examples from the ground beetle family Carabidae. This method is widely applicable in population genomics, phylogeography and deeper scale phylogenetics, representing a cost-effective addition to the toolkit of evolutionary biologists.
